Floral Letter

I saw this project on roolee.com. I LOVED it, and decided to create my own blooming monogram for a photo wall in my wedding.
I am adding a few tips that I learned while making this beautiful wedding floral letter.

Size Floral Letter
The size is determined by the size of the paper mache letter or number you choose. We purchased our letter from Hobby Lobby. It measures approximately 15.5” tall x 10” wide.
SUPPLIES
For best effect, choose an assortment of texture, color, and size for your florals.
For accent, we used a couple roses. They were a bit larger than the background flowers. We basically kept to a cream, or off-white, theme, but tossed in some blue and pastel peach for interest. Choose your colors based on your own preferences and purpose.
small flowers: We found that flat-lying flowers worked best. We quickly determined that an assortment of sizes were needed. Medium filled most of the space, with small flowers filling in gaps. A bit of greenery adds interest.
paper mache letter or number: Choose a size that works for your purpose. Our “H” measures 15” tall by 10” wide.
larger flowers: Choose a couple larger flowers to add interest to the piece.
glue gun: A hot or cold glue gun would work well. This is only used to hold the floral foam in the letter.
box cutter: The box cutter is used for cutting off one side of the letter (to create a hollow area for holding the floal foam.
scissors: sharp scissors for precision cutting.
cutting board & wax paper: Use a mat or table covering to protect your working surface. We used a plastic table cloth to protect the working area, a cutting board for cutting foam, and wax paper under the glue gun to catch drips.
dry floral foam: The flowers are artificial, so wet foam is not necessary. Buy enough foam to fill your letter or number.
large ruler: I used my large sewing ruler for this project (I use it for almost all of my projects). Draw a line all the way around your letter or number. This will be your cutting line.
pencil: Use the pencil to mark your cutting line.
knife: A sharp knife is needed for cutting the floral foam to fit inside the letter.
floral wire cutter: You will need to snip off the stems of the flowers about an inch from the flower. Cut as you go, so you don’t cut flowers you will not be using, and you will get a feel for the proper length as you go along.
DIRECTIONS

1. Cut Off Top Of Letter
Lay your letter on a flat surface. Draw a line all the way around your letter; this will be your cutting line. Using your box cutters (and scissors for tight spots), cut off the top of your letter. We cut approximately 1/2 way.
The letter might have “filler.” The filer gives strength to the letter. Remove any filler. The letter needs to be empty to hold the floral foam.
2. Cut Floral Foam
Place the floral foam next to your letter, and score the foam at the depth it needs to be cut. Then, score the foam all the way around the block. We found this method to be the easiest and fastest way to mark the foam for cutting depth accurately.
The following image shows an exacto knife scoring the foam. You can also use a knife.
Using a knife, slice the foam all the way through at the score line.
3. Glue Floral Foam Into Place
Continue to cut and place the floral foam inside the letter. Use the hot or cold glue gun to hold it in place. The foam will not be seen, but we filled the letter. You will not be able to place a flower where there is a gap in the foam.
In the following photo, I have placed some pieces of floral foam inside the letter, and am scoring another piece of foam for cutting.
4. Cut & Place Flowers
We found that a 1” stem was about right. This was just enough to hold the flower in the foam securely, without being too long. Play around with placement. The florals are not glued, so feel free to experiment.
It’s nice to have a couple of focal points. We used larger roses in two places. We scattered around various textures, flower types and colors to create balance.
Finished Photo Wall
I love my finished photo wall! Our guests were able to use this backdrop for taking photos with their own cameras, or with instant cameras that I provided.
