Fish Block

The fish block consists of rectangles and triangles. There are two fish blocks in the quilt. They can be made by the same method, then turn one over if you wish to create a mirror image (one fish facing one way, and the other fish facing the opposite direction).

Fish Block Size

The block size is as unfinished block - not yet stitched together.

Each individual fish block measures 12.5" high x 12" wide

When all blocks are stitched together, the Puppy & Pals quilt measures 36.5” x 37.5” wide.

All seams are 1/4”.

Using Your New Fish Quilt Block

Use this pattern for pillows, or use it in our adorable Puppy & Cat Pals quilt. For instructions on assembling and finishing the Puppy & Cat Pals quilt, go to:

Pre-wash, dry & press fabric before using

Your fabric will shrink, so pre-wash, dry and press before using if you plan to wash your project in the future.

Iron between each step. Read through all directions completely before beginning.

I recommend the following tools for cutting. I use these tools for most projects. They allow for easy, precise cutting.

Cut the 5.5” squares on the diagonal (one of fish fabric and one of background fabric). Cut again on the diagonal - this time in the opposite direction. Each 5.5” square is now cut into fourth.

Piece together as shown in the diagram. Stitch together into squares. Square down to 4.5”. You will have two squares - enough for both fish.

Fish Body

Cut the 3.5” squares on the diagonal and stitch one background triangle with a fish fabric triangle. Square down to 2.5”. You will have two squares that make up the fish face.

Stitch together pieces as shown in the following photo. On the left is the fish tail square with back half of body. That is stitched to a 2.5” x 4.5” fish fabric strip. On the right of that are the two squared down face squares.
